Hey Buzzards, my buddy has a couple days off coming up soon and since they're few and far between I am trying to make sure whatever we paddle is tolerable.

Gilman is in the area and according to the following gauge it's in if you're following the WWSR flow recommendations

USGS Current Conditions for USGS 09064600 EAGLE RIVER NEAR MINTURN, CO

I believe I remember reading about some stipulations with that gauge and the flows that are actually going into the gorge?

Thanks in advance!

Yo Buzzards. I just got off the phone with Jim, the guy that does long draw operations.

Water supplies are very low this year, and instead of doing continuous water deliveries (ie continuous flows out of long draw or chambers), water supply co plans to deliver water every other week. Current plans are to ramp up long draw saturday may 26th (memmorial day weekend) to about 200 ish cfs. Plan is to deliver water for 5 days and then shut long draw off for the next week. The week after they plan to turn the water back on to deliver more water. They are planning 7 deliveries which should get them into mid August. They might not turn on long draw every week... they might alternate between chambers and long draw.

This is Jim's best guess right now, and of course its subject to change. If long draw bumps up to 200 next weekend, that might be the best option to hit the big south this year. I spoke with the forest service today about early gate opening, and they said that the fire is taking up all of their focus and they aren't even thinking about opening roads. Bummer.

We did the barnes meadow reservoir paddle / hike combo to get into the second 1/2 of big south and tacked on spencer heights a couple years ago and that was a fun adventure day. Memmorial day weekend might be a good time to attempt that. The extra flow will certainly help out all the poudre river runners as well.

Keep an eye on that long draw gauge. Seems like they typically turn it on late morning (11ish or so).

With people down in the dumps about the drought and suggesting silly ideas like running Clear Creek at 200 cfs, I figured I would just let you all know that we have water down here. It has good for the last month and a half, and this might be the last good weekend, for the more moderate options at least. For this weekend, we have:

Upper A- medium, maybe low-medium.
Rockwood- nice medium.
Piedra- lower side of good.
1st and 3rd gorges Lime- low side of good at least on Saturday.
Vallecito- maybe a bit high Saturday, but probably dropping Sunday.
Really good playboating in Durango at the park.

If you don't mind driving a bit and want to kayak, come on down.

They show Upper Clear Creek/BR good at 250 and lower Clear Creek at 400.

Curious from those with experience, throwing out BR, what is the best IV section, least boat abuse at the current levels of 200-300cfs?

Thanks,

Hi,
I noticed the HandiRack Inflatable Roof Rack system at Confluence Kayaks.

Has anyone had experience with this? I own a hybrid and thought it would be nice to have a racking system which I can easily remove and put on...given that a kayak would stay secure with the system. My Honda Insight doesn't have a good place I can secure the kayak in front of the car (bow of the kayak tied down to someplace under the engine that is).

Thanks for any insight!

Hi,

I recently started boating and fell absolutely in love with it. So I am planning a trip for my friends and me on Memorial Day weekend. I've checked sites like Eddy Flower's and thought maybe Desolation Canyon would be fun. I could camp, etc. We were all even willing to pay the fee. However, apparently from an experienced boater, I learned that that is a week long trip, and not possible.

So, to the point. I am looking for a run where we will be able to take out at sunset, camp, then wake up and finish the run. It cannot be too crazy, I'm thinking class III will be just fine, along with a stretch to just float and soak up the sun.

Does anyone know of anywhere near Utah? I live North of Salt Lake and was planning on the Green River, but we'd all be willing to go down near Moab.

Thank you,
